Young Black Man
5th July 2010
On the weekend we went to Killer Robot where I met Matthew Blackman – who opened the Young Black Man gallery with Ed Young. I grilled him a little bit (maybe too much…) about why their latest exhibition features nothing more than a broken gallery window, patched together with band-aids and a couple of bricks on the floor inside.
I think he tried to explain it to me, but I was a little drunk – so today I’ve been reading about them and about Kendell Geers whose show it is. I imagine being exiled would probably make me feel like throwing a brick through a window as well. Complex, intricate and containing meanings and references I’d like to understand, but probably never will – his work hides behind an ordinary and effortless creativity.
“For this exhibition, Geers recreates his 1993 work Title Withheld (Brick). The show, simply titled 1993, is at best an accurate representation of years past, at worst a comment on years present.”
Head down and check them out – 69 Roeland Street, Cape Town.

I love it how something so pretty can be so rude.
