Zoom Zoo

zoom zoo alphabet cards mike yamada Zoom Zoo

These awesome illustrated Zoom Zoo cards are by Mike Yamada, a designer at Dreamworks and like they mentioned on Not Cot, completely reminiscent of Richard Scarry’s story books! We used to have heaps of them when we were kids.

It’s cool to think that the kids of tomorrow will have something other than iPad games to keep them busy.

Sketchtravel

30th November 2011

I never heard about Sketchtravel before, but after reading about it this morning I fell completely in love with the project.

The red sketchbook was passed between 71 artists in 12 countries over 4 and a half years. The list of artists and illustrators is impressive (Quentin Blake, James Jean, Taiyō Matsumoto to name a few) but it’s the idea that this little book was travelling for all that time that makes me smile – and that they managed to auction it off for $96,000, all of which was donated to Room to Read, a awesome charity that helps kids learn to read. Sold.

The beautiful video was put together by Sketchtravel and is totally inspiring and well worth a watch.

You can read more about Sketchtravel here or buy the book from here (which has just been added to the top of my christmas list).

Developed by designer Samuel Wilkinson, Biome is a terrarium that contains an app capable of managing water, light, nutrient levels all easily controlled by your iPad.

Although it’s still only a prototype, isn’t it a beautiful way of merging technology with nature?

love made me do it lo studio giveaway love made me do it / LO Studio Give away

What’s exciting about this post (aside from the fact that you could possibly win a LO Studio voucher worth R350!) is that the super cute girl up there is Maike. One half of welovepictures – our amazing wedding photographers! I absolutely cannot wait for her and her husband Travis to shoot our wedding!

But enough of that for now – this is about love made me do it, Maike’s awesome blog of all things creative and sweet. Today she’s giving away R350 to one lucky person to spend at LO. Think cute summer dresses, colourful tops and beautifully cut pants. Check out the details here.

(How lovely is the LO logo by the way?)

QLOCKTWO

QLOCKTWO clock biegert funk QLOCKTWO

Si showed me this clock the other day and since then I’ve been seeing it everywhere. Designed by German company Biegert & Funk, QLOCKTWO is simple and elegant and I think it would look amazing in the big open plan kitchen I’m going to design one day!

The best bit? It’s available in 8 colours and 11 languages. A wall of clocks set to different time zones could be taken to a whole new level…

Wrap Up

pendleton glacier national park blanket Wrap Up

How awesome is this Pendleton Glacier National Park Blanket? I found it over on the National Geographic Gift Guide and although it’s expensive at $178, it’s also been in production since 1916. Good old fashioned design at it’s best, which says enough for me.

Get yours here.

Richard Mosse: Infra

28th November 2011

richard mosse infra Richard Mosse: Infra

These fascinating images are part of a series called ‘Infra’ by Irish photographer Richard Mosse. They were shot in the Democratic Republic of Congo on a color infrared film called Kodak Aerochrome. Now discontinued, it was once used by the military as surveillance technology to help detect camouflage by registering an invisible spectrum of infrared light, rendering the green landscape in vivid hues of lavender, crimson, and hot pink. Beautiful.

“Infra offers a radical rethinking of how to depict a conflict as complex and intractable as that of the ongoing war in the Congo. The results offer a fevered inflation of the traditional reportage document, underlining the tension between art, fiction, and photojournalism. Infra initiates a dialogue with photography that begins as an intoxicating meditation on a broken documentary genre, but ends as a haunting elegy for a vividly beautiful land touched by unspeakable tragedy.”

Infra is showing from November 17 – December 23.

Not For Parents: The Travel Book

28th November 2011

lonely planet not for parents travel book Not For Parents: The Travel Book

We’ve bought loads of Lonely Planet books over the years and they’ve always been amazing in helping us on our travels, however in the Not for Parents: The Travel Book you won’t find bus schedules, advice on restaurants to try or be able to work out which hostel has a better bar.

Written especially for kids aged 8 – 11, it features weird and wonderful foods, strange historical facts, cool stories and tonnes of information to get those little creative juices flowing. Every country has a whole page dedicated to it and I can’t think of a more awesome way to teach kids about travelling and the world we live in.

I’ve been meaning to blog these images for ages. They were from a Vogue shoot in India years ago. I actually bought a back issue of Vogue just for these pictures. I think it must have been around 2005.

There’s something about them that makes me feel peaceful and I think they’re beautiful.

A Rainbow Pencil Stylus? Awesome!

Designed to be used on capacitive touch screens like the iPad, Estylo is the first and only wooden stylus of it’s kind and as well as being eco-friendly, the magnetic versions have also been designed to connect onto the side of the iPad. Clever. These would be great for anyone wanting to sketch or draw on their iPad.

With the project up on Kickstarter, I’m happy to say that Plai have reached their target goal and funding is now being spent on research and development for the Estylo 2.
