Love & Patience

Please be patient with my lack of neon love over the next few days – I’m working on a top secret project and I have no time for ANYTHING else!

It’s not really top secret, just a little bit…

Natural Born by alfred

Here’s a quick look at a small site I just finished working on, for a gorgeous jewellery company based out in sexy St. Tropez.

Natural Born by alfred is inspired by Tibetan culture and a bohemian lifestyle, and uses symbolic gemstones, silver, bronze and leather to create exquisite one-off pieces.

Think Johnny Deep meets the Dalai Lama. Beautiful.

Touristiness

23rd May 2012

touristed areas google maps bluemoon Touristiness

I find this map put together by tech firm BlueMoon fascinating.

It shows the world’s most and least touristed places with photos geo-tagged by Panoramio users. Yellow indicating lots of ‘touristiness’ and grey indicating that no photos have been uploaded in these areas. Central Africa, Northern Canada, Northern Russia and The Amazon seem good bets if you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten track.

Oh wow. Whoever knew there was a National Stationery Show in New York City?

Man, oh man. I would get lost in a place like that. All those papers and cards! *sigh* It’s bad enough at Design Indaba when I find a stand that does something vaguely stationery related!

Anyway, I saw Grace Bonney’s post over on the awesome DesignSponge and apparently neon is a continuing trend which makes me happy. Along with this gorgeous calendar by Linda & Harriett.

Glowing Words

This Glowing Text series by South Korean artist Jung Lee is eerily beautiful. So simple and provocative.

With an M.A. in Photography from London’s Royal College, a B.A. in Photography from Kent Institute of Art & Design and a B.A. in Mass Communication & Journalism from Kyung Hee University in Korea she now lives ands works in Seoul.

This series was shown at the 2012 HK International Art Fair. I wish I’d been there to see it.

The days are getting shorter and definitely colder in Cape Town and I would love love LOVE one of these Vík Prjónsdóttir’s Twosome Blankets for movie nights!

Can you imagine anything more amazing than cuddling under this on the couch?

On a side note: I found this picture on Remodelista, in an article about A Perfect Day in Toronto. Some of our good friends have just moved to Toronto and I think we might just have to visit. It also mentioned Bookhou - which got me all excited because Si bought me one of their bags for my birthday and it’s been waiting for me in London for 3 weeks already! I can’t wait to see it.

So Where’s Home?

21st May 2012

I never even knew that there was a phrase to describe people like me. Apparently I am a Third Culture Kid or a TCK for short, because I spent a significant portion of my childhood overseas.

I was born in Australia and left to live in Hong Kong when I was 8. I still consider Hong Kong my home although I haven’t lived there for ages, but I also consider Sydney my home (even though I was born in Melbourne), London and now Cape Town.

I thought this video was interesting, although I didn’t agree with not knowing where home was or feeling like I didn’t belong anywhere. I honestly believe that home is where your heart is and that your heart doesn’t necessarily have to be in one place… and who says you need to have one home anyway?

I love looking through Minieco. I’m always inspired by the cute things Kate comes up with and amazed that she’s a full time mum as well – wow.

Last month I wrote about her 8-bit heart card and this month she’s gone one better with these little 8-bit skull popup cards. I love them and want to send one to everyone I know!

Download the skull template here, but if you want the whole shebang (space invaders and envelopes too!) go here.

This week is going to be chilled. Haunting, electronic goodness accompanied by melancholy vocals. Enjoy.

Message to Bears, Folding Leaves
Aside from having an awesome name, this ambient electronic album is beautiful.

Bon Iver, Holocene
One of my all time favourite songs from the soul wrenching and amazing Justin Vernon.

Bat For Lashes, Daniel
Another one of my all time favourites – I could listen to this over and over again.

Fink, Perfect Darkness
Oh, oh, oh.

Here’s a little ray of sunshine on a Monday morning.

London based guerrilla gardener Steve Wheen creates teeny tiny gardens inside potholes and cracks found in various cities. Love them. If I found one of these walking along the street it would make my day!

Those of you who know me, also know of my somewhat unexplained obsession with Walk Like An Egyptian.

Kicking off the weekend is a version by The Cleverlys. Quite simply a-ma-zing.

Oh my. Child’s Own Studio celebrates kid’s drawings by turning them into soft toys. I think this might possibly be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

I am in love with the happy purple sheep / scary red monster. Now I just need to wait for my sweet little nephew to get big enough to draw!

3191 miles apart quarterly 7 3191 Miles Apart

I’ve been a fan of  Maria and Stephanie’s 3191 Miles Apart projects since I discovered them a few years ago.

In 2007 they started a blog, 3191: A Year of Mornings with each woman posting a photograph from their respective locations (Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon) every morning.

Simple and sweet, their styles compliment each other perfectly and since then they’ve done other projects, including 3191: A Year of Evenings and more recently began publishing 3191 Quarterly.

Anyhoo, Issue No. 7 is now for sale and if you feel like buying it before midnight on Monday, you’ll get yourself a discount.

The Burning House (literally)

burning house series carrie schneider1 The Burning House (literally)

Wow. And wow again.

A perpetually burning house in the middle of a lake shot by American photographer Carrie Schneider. Amazing.

Burning House is a series of photographs taken over 2 years, during different seasons, in different weather and at different times of the day. Schneider built and rebuilt the house numerous times to end up with a series of fifteen 40″x 50″ c-prints. I admire her dedication and love the eerie stillness to these images. Simply beautiful.

I really love Toy font by photographer Joshua Scott for Bullet Magazine. It was put together with thousands of tiny plastic toys and objects overlaid on Giorgio Sans Bold, a custom font that was created in collaboration with Commercial Type.

August Table

17th May 2012

august table hong kong series August Table

This city map tableware by ex city-planner Cherry Chaicharn is lovely. She started August Table after moving to Hong Kong from her beloved San Francisco.

She says “Sometimes you just want to have something that reminds you of a city, but you’re looking for something classy and not necessarily touristy, something a little more subtle and personal. When a sweatshirt or a bumper sticker doesn’t quite capture how you feel, perhaps a more grown-up memento is a better way to go.”

At the moment they do platters and plate sets of 4 – for Paris, Chicago, San Francisco and Hong Kong, although she writes if you send her a blurb about your favourite city you might well inspire the next set of plates!
