Mario Gerth
22nd December 2011

These stunning images were shot by German photographer Mario Gerth.
Surma is the collective name for the Suri, Mursi and Me’en groups that inhabit the southwestern part of Ethiopia and these images were taken this year over 2 weeks. Take a look at his gallery on flickr - each one is just as beautiful as the next.

BLANK {space}
22nd December 2011

The other day I discovered BLANK {space} – an sweet little store-cum-gallery that is literally on my doorstep. It’s tiny and hidden away behind big black grills, but inside it’s light and pretty and full of gorgeous letterpress stationary *sigh*, unique prints and limited edition works of art.
Another awesome Cape Town find. Yay!
The Art Of Flight
16th December 2011

Last night we went to watch The Art Of Flight which was being shown as part of the Wavescape 2011 Surf Film Festival. If you want a movie that literally takes your breath away, this is the one for you.
Just as good (if not better) than That’s It That’s All, Travis Rice and his RedBull/Quiksilver crew travel from Alaska to Patagonia in search of the perfect ride. Completely awe-inspiring, the most stunning scenery and jaw-dropping snowboarding that will blow your mind, this is what life is all about.

Help-Portrait
9th December 2011
I wish I’d heard about Help-Portrait earlier. On December 10th photographers around the world are getting together with their communities to shoot portraits of people in need. It sounds like a really cool idea and something that I think would work so well in a city like Cape Town. I’m adding this into my diary for next year.
Have a watch of Jeremy Cowart explaining how the idea came about on TEDx.
Volvo Ocean Race
8th December 2011

Last night we saw the Camper yacht down at the V&A Waterfront because the teams taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race are in Cape Town until the 12th December.
One of the most extreme around the world sailing races, the race began in Alicante, Spain in October and will finish up in Galway, Ireland in July next year. Sailing 72,000kms through some of the world’s most dangerous stretches of ocean, these 11 man crew’s must be about as hardcore as they come.
This lovely infographic designed by Column Five Media can be viewed over on NOWNESS to help you get a better idea of what these guys are up against.
Cartoloji
1st December 2011

These maps by Cartoloji are interesting. I thought they looked a lot like camouflage. Did you guess that was Australia at the top and South Africa on the bottom?
They’re available in a wide range of countries, colours, sizes and 10% of each sale goes to the country that was bought through GlobalGiving.

love made me do it / LO Studio Give-away
29th November 2011

What’s exciting about this post (aside from the fact that you could possibly win a LO Studio voucher worth R350!) is that the super cute girl up there is Maike. One half of welovepictures – our amazing wedding photographers! I absolutely cannot wait for her and her husband Travis to shoot our wedding!
But enough of that for now – this is about love made me do it, Maike’s awesome blog of all things creative and sweet. Today she’s giving away R350 to one lucky person to spend at LO. Think cute summer dresses, colourful tops and beautifully cut pants. Check out the details here.
(How lovely is the LO logo by the way?)
Topless Tuesday
22nd November 2011

My cousin sent me a link to Topless Tuesday this morning. Why didn’t I think of that?!
(Thanks Ewa)
Afro Hair
18th November 2011

I picked up this paper bag yesterday from African Image – a cool Cape Town shop selling all kinds of weird and wonderful kitsch African things!
How awesome are these hairstyles?
Creative Spaces
11th November 2011

Design Milk article Defining The Designer was an interesting read this morning. I find it fascinating looking at other people’s creative workspaces.
For more inspired creative spaces take a look at Cape Town’s We-Are-Awesome blog that has a section called Spaces.
Bamako Encounters
8th November 2011

Running until January 1st, 2012 is one of Africa’s biggest photography exhibitions, Bamako Encounters 2011. This year examines the search for a sustainable world through photography.
The African Photography Biennial is made up of a number of shows with the main exhibition For a Sustainable World being held at the National Museum of Mali. Paris Photo is also taking place this week from 10th – 13th November showcasing African Photography – from Bamako to Cape Town at The Grande Palais in Paris. I wonder if anything will come to Cape Town?
(Thanks mum)
Yuppiechef Rocks!
3rd November 2011

Woohoo! I’m so excited to have just been delivered a little present from Yuppiechef for taking part in the Enkosi Cookathon last month!
Not only are they super sweet for sending a box of such cool things (a shiny Scanpan knife, cute JosephJoseph magnetic measuring spoon, a certificate, magnet and a R250 gift voucher!) their packaging and branding is awesome – the graphic designer in me is happy!
The box was put together so nicely and with such cool attention to detail that I had to share it. Thank you Yuppiechef for making my day!
Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011
21st October 2011

Every year I love going to see the Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award. Not only are the photographs breathtaking, the stories behind the shots are often just as incredible.
This super cute photo of a baby snub-nose monkey won French photographer Cyril Rouso runner-up in the endangered wildlife category. Check out the other winners here.
The exhibition runs until next March at the Natural History Museum in London and the International tour hits the Iziko Museum in Cape Town on December 6th.
Lauren Fowler
17th October 2011

I’ve been having a lot of fun looking through illustrations by Lauren Fowler this morning. I especially like her Dapper Gentleman animals.
Emphas.is
4th October 2011
Emphas.is is an awesome site where photojournalists pitch their projects directly to the public who then decide whether their story is worth doing by contributing to their funding.
One of the projects well worth supporting is by the extremely talented photojournalist Robin Hammond. Condemned is a self-funded project that focuses on mental health issues within East Africa.
Robin is now trying to raise enough funds to travel to West Africa to continue documenting the plight of these neglected people. If you’d like to help fund his project you can do so here.
The International Photography Awards
26th August 2011

Our amazingly talented neighbour Robin Hammond has just been announced as a finalist in the Deeper Perspective International Photography Awards.
His entry ‘CONDEMNED‘ focuses on mental illness in Uganda and as always his images are haunting but beautiful. Fingers crossed for him to win.
Toffie Food Festival
17th August 2011

Just found out the Toffie Food Festival is on from the 3rd-4th September at the Cape Town City Hall.
It looks awesome and there’s going to be a talk by Julie Powell from the film Julie and Julia! Too bad we’ll be away – I really wish I could go.
Loving the poster too. It would go perfectly with my other 2 Toffie exhibition prints…
