Kama Sutra

Part of Penguin’s Graphic Classics series, where every classic re-edited is paired with an artist to produce collectable works, the cover of this new edition Kama Sutra has been illustrated by vector queen Malika Favre.

A playful, bold alphabet makes up the words Kama Sutra, while the colours are a nod to the books Indian origins. With original text by Vātsyāyana and no pictures inside, I think in this case you can definitely judge a book by it’s cover. Sexy.

Homemade is Best

Ikea is one of my favourite shops in the whole world. I’m not ashamed to admit it and Si teases me about it all the time. When we moved to Cape Town and I realised we weren’t going to be able to stock the flat with things that had names like skårpt, klunsa and ribba I was sad!

However, to make up for my lack of Ikea over the last 2 years, I decided I’ll just have to buy their new cookbook Hembakat är Bäst (Homemade is Best). How awesome does it look!

Produced by ad agency Forsman & Bodenfors, photographed by Carl Kleiner and styled by Evelina Bratell, the beautiful images make me want to eat everything – including the ingredients before they’ve been cooked! Minimal cooking. I like.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the BFG, Royal Mail has launched a collection of Roald Dahl stamps, illustrated by his long time friend and collaborator Quentin Blake.

These stories remind me so much of my childhood and I read and loved them all.

All the collections are available to buy on the Royal Mail online shop.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go.

I can imagine how much Dr. Seuss would’ve loved this video! The crazy, the sexy and the cool recite his final book about life’s ups and downs at Burning Man. Brilliant and totally appropriate.

Oh, I really, really, really want to go.

Sketchtravel

30th November 2011

I never heard about Sketchtravel before, but after reading about it this morning I fell completely in love with the project.

The red sketchbook was passed between 71 artists in 12 countries over 4 and a half years. The list of artists and illustrators is impressive (Quentin Blake, James Jean, Taiyō Matsumoto to name a few) but it’s the idea that this little book was travelling for all that time that makes me smile – and that they managed to auction it off for $96,000, all of which was donated to Room to Read, a awesome charity that helps kids learn to read. Sold.

The beautiful video was put together by Sketchtravel and is totally inspiring and well worth a watch.

You can read more about Sketchtravel here or buy the book from here (which has just been added to the top of my christmas list).

Not For Parents: The Travel Book

28th November 2011

lonely planet not for parents travel book Not For Parents: The Travel Book

We’ve bought loads of Lonely Planet books over the years and they’ve always been amazing in helping us on our travels, however in the Not for Parents: The Travel Book you won’t find bus schedules, advice on restaurants to try or be able to work out which hostel has a better bar.

Written especially for kids aged 8 – 11, it features weird and wonderful foods, strange historical facts, cool stories and tonnes of information to get those little creative juices flowing. Every country has a whole page dedicated to it and I can’t think of a more awesome way to teach kids about travelling and the world we live in.

Jack Draws Anything

6th October 2011

If you haven’t already heard of Jack, the little boy who draws anything, then you probably will after the release of his book today.

A few months ago I asked Jack to draw me a picture of what he thought Between the Neon and the Sea looked like. This is what he sent me. Awesome! I love it.

“Jack didn’t know what neon was so we did a wee bit of learning and I explained. After some more thinking he got out his crayons and drew the sea at one end (blue wavy colour) and drew some neon at the other end (he used his Crayola Extreme Twistables for this job) and then inbetween put a hedgehog.” Ed Henderson

Help support Jack’s fundraising and buy a copy of his book Jack Draws Anything here.

Moby Dick

every page of moby dick Moby Dick

Wow – I’ve just found the Moby Dick blog by Matt Kish. He set out to illustrate every page (all 552 of them) of Moby Dick and his drawings are beautiful, delicate and lovely. I especially like this one.

Tin House Books have published the full book, Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page and you can find it here.

Bird

9th July 2010

I can remember exactly the first time it occurred to me that bird’s were in fact quite amazing – I was on the Galapagos Islands and watched a flock of Blue Footed Boobies diving for fish and it was just so cool.

Bird is the latest book by photographer Andrew Zuckerman. Shot with a Leaf Aptus 75S digital camera along with high-speed strobe lighting, Zuckerman spent a year travelling all over the world using a mobile studio, freezing the birds in flight against a white backdrop.

Capturing colour and detail like you’ve never seen, his book will give you a whole new appreciation for these beautiful animals.

Glastonbury begins…

23rd June 2010

Today is the first day Glasto opens, so I thought I’d go with an appropriate theme…

Venetia Dearden is a photographer from Somerset who has travelled and worked all over the world. Her second book Glastonbury, Another Stage features photos of the crazy, weird and wonderful who make it up to Worthing Farm every June for a festival of music, colour and (usually) mud.
