Design Indaba is fast approaching and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for 2012.

Spanish industrial designer, product designer and artist Jaime Hayón is high up on my list of people to check out (Hope Bird is one of his) as is MDC Interiors.

I am also crazy excited about A Taste of Sónarwhich is on at City Hall on Friday 2nd March. I love that Design Indaba is broadening its creative scope and throwing some awesome electronica into the mix!

safwat saleem oh expletive zombies unicorns Oh Expletive!

Oh Expletive! is a project by Safwat Saleem about “ass kicking and mayhem.” Unicorns, Zombies and 8-Bit creature fights – what more could you want?!

The Kickstarter project has already been fully backed and after asking for $3000 for screen print and t-shirt production costs, pledges so far have raised $22,655 which is incredible.

The video explaining the project is awesome – take a minute to watch it – and you can check out the rest of the designs over on the Oh Expletive! Kickstarter page.

firefly photo therapy newborn babies asia The Firefly

2 days after my gorgeous little nephew Maddox was born last month, he had to go back into the hospital to have phototherapy treatment for jaundice.

Apparently this is quite a common problem with newborns, so I was really happy to read about The Firefly this morning – the first low cost phototherapy treatment device being used to treat babies in rural communities in South East Asia. Developed by a Massachusetts company Design that Matters, their mission is “…to create products that improve the services of social enterprises in developing countries.”

Whenever I see new work by Pablo Alfieri I can’t help but sigh. It’s so beautiful and I’m always inspired by what he produces. His ideas are quite simple on the whole but he executes them in such a polished way. Colourful, bright and bold and usually with a little twist. Amazing.

Check out more of the Argentinian designer’s work on flickr.

Tattly™ is the super cool ‘Designy Temporary Tattoo’ shop started up by the always inspiring SwissMiss.

I’ve just bought these 3 beauties for my awesome little cousin Alex. He’s 5 and lives in Australia. I can imagine him rocking it out on his first day of school with a robot tattoo and a late watch. Cool!

Continuing with my obsession for all things letterpressed is this very cool poster by Richard Ardagh of Elephants’ Graveyard. It reminds me of when I used to listen to Counting Crows. Buy it here.

(This week I’m meeting Gitanjali from The Letterpress Company here in Cape Town to talk about some letterpress invitations. Can’t wait – will let you know how it goes…)
