I’m sure a lot of people by now have seen the poppies at the Tower of London, either in person or in one of the millions of photographs online.
Blood-Swept Lands And Seas of Red represents 100 years since Britain became involved in the First World War and serves as a beautiful and poignant reminder of the 888,246 Commonwealth soldiers who gave their lives for their countries.
When I went to see the poppies in August around half had been planted. Even then they took my breath away so I can only imagine how beautiful and moving it must be to see all of them in the ground today.
The work by British ceramic artist Paul Cummins will begin being dismantled tomorrow by the 8,000 volunteers (who also planted the poppies) and will sold in the new year for £25 each. It’s incredible to know that once sold they will raise around £15 million for six service charities, including Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion and I feel honoured to have been able to see them in person.

I know it’s been a bit quiet on BTN this week, but hopefully this beautiful timelapse will make up for it.
How amazing are hot air balloons?

I feel a little bit cheated every October because buying pumpkins to decorate at Halloween just doesn’t work in Cape Town. Wrong hemisphere, wrong season, I get it.
This year I didn’t even try to find one so I’ve been admiring other people’s instead. Here are some of my favourites…
This was the last pumpkin we made. Doraemon – Hong Kong stylee.

In the spirit of Halloween I thought I’d share this 2000 year old skeleton mosaic discovered in the doomed city of Pompeii.
It’s thought to have once been the emblema (which is an ornate floor centrepiece) of a dining room and a reminder that one day we will all be dead and so we should eat, drink and be merry while we can, or ‘memento mori’ – meaning literally ‘remember that you will die’ in Latin.
Skeleton images were found all over Pompeii, in frescos, mosaics, sculptures and tableware, as a reminder to ‘seize the day’ and live life to the full, since death could be just around the corner.

…thinking about booking tickets to Rocking The Daisies.
…getting excited (but not too much yet) about the possibility of a new flat.
…making a list of some DIY ideas to try out in said flat.
…experiencing blog envy.
…counting down the minutes until dinner here.

…and here’s a bit of colour for your weekend!
Holi One was awesome. The best thing I’ve done by far in a long, long time.
This amazing photo was taken by Iain and the awesome video was put together by Justin.
Same time, same place next year guys?

British musician Bonobo has enlisted the genius of regular B3TAN Cyriak for his new video Cirrus. It’s beautiful (in a weird and wonderful way) and if you haven’t already seen it, also check out Cyriak’s Cows & Cows & Cows video which is awesome.
Black Sands is one of my all time favourite albums and judging by Cirrus, The North Borders will also be amazing.
The other exciting news is that the Roundhouse and Ninja Tunes are presenting a Bonobo curated all day event, with a new live show by Bonobo on May 18th … and we just happen to be in London. Booked. Hooray!
